2024 is the first time in our experience in Italy that the Tour de France will run the first stages of that great World Tour Race there. This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime!

I am not privy to the planning of the Tour de France, but I have a good idea why they selected Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna for this year’s Grand Départ. I believe they selected this region of Italy for several good reasons. First, it is known in Italy as the Cyclist’s Paradise where the culture of bicycling has been nurtured for decades. Second, Marco Pantani was born and learned to become a Tour de France Champion in the very region of Stage One and the very roads we will ride and explore during our stay here. And, finally, the roads in this area are very good and challenging, but the strong teams may very well be able to deliver their sprinters to the stage’s end and what could shape up to be a very exciting finish. Could Mark Cavendish take the Tour de France Tour stage win record that he now shares with the legendary Eddy Merckx, a title they share at 34 Tour stage wins.
Apart from providing a VIP experience for our guests at the finish line of Stage One we will be operating out of Cattolica, near the border of Emilia-Romagna and Marche, two beautiful Regions of Italy and close to the Republic of San Marino. With its extensive network of wonderful roads winding through and climbing stunning landscapes of ancient medieval fortresses and rolling hills, the riding here is as good as anywhere I have ever ridden in the world. Emilia-Romagna is also known as the “breadbasket” of Italy with its lush vineyards and olive groves, and renowned for its agriculture, seafood, processed meats, cheeses and wine. You may ride 300-400 miles during your stay, but you may also gain a pound or two. And as important, surrounded by all this art, history and tradition is our host, Kelly Gerla, and the beautiful, “4-Star” Hotel Kursaal in Cattolica overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Even after a hard ride it is difficult to resist the temptation to lounge in the pool, walk on the beach right in front of the hotel or down the street for a refreshing gelato. After all, this is where Italians come for the family vacation!
