Mountain Bike in Patagonia with Steve Lehman Tours

Although I am basically a road and track cyclist, I am no stranger to the mountain bike.   While road riding in Patagonia’s Lake Region I have looked longingly at the trails and dirt roads dissappearing into it’s fantastic forests, mountains and steppe region. So, for 2008 we have used our unmatched knowledge and expertise in this area of Argentina to assembled the same top-notch local team and support you’ve learned to expect of us and promise to deliver to you the ultimate mountain biking experience. During the week you will experience all that is Patagonia.  Each day we will offer incredible rides, exhilarating climbs and thrilling descents, all offered in homogenous groups from advanced, to intermediate or a more laid-back pace. . .you decide.

Day to Day Itinerary:

Day 1 - Cerro Otto (Otto Mountain)                                       Today we ascend Otto Mountain with a10km climb through wonderful forests to Hasburg Rock. Here you’ll enjoy the unbelievable view of Lakes Gutierrez and Nahuel Huapi. The descent can be taken at your own pace providing as much adrenaline as you can handle.

Day 2 - Arrollo Chacay(Chacay Stream)                                  We will start this ride along the Limay River which is about as complete a departure from yesterdays environment as you could imagine. Referred to as the Enchanted Valley with it’s beautiful

river  surrounded by mountains and spectacular volcanic formations, you’ll think your on the set of a wild west film.  We’ll climb to an elevation of over 1500 meters and be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the Patagonian Steppe.  We will finish our circuit with a thrilling 7km descent back to the Limay River.

Day 3 - La Vuelta de las Pasarelas(The Bridges Ride)                                                                                                 This ride is within the Nahuel Huapi National Park and crosses the Manzo River, known for it’s unparalleled trout fishing, wild rapids and transparent, torquoise water. We will ride through forests, streams and alpine meadows before stopping for a great barbeque in this most picturesque area.

Day 4 - Day off to enjoy any of the multitude of activities available or explore the mountains around Bariloche on your own. . .your choice.  This evening’s traditional Argentinian dinner will feature a Tango Show

Day 5 - Bosque de los Arrayanes(Arrayanes Forest)                                                                                                  We start this excursion on the Quetrihue Peninsula and on to the Los Arrayanes National Park, last redoubt of the beautiful Arrayan Tree.  It is said that Walt Disney got his inspiration for the movie Bambi at this precise location.  This is a relatively easy ride.    Special Option: For those who want to enjoy a pure adreniline producing descent, this is their best chance. We will start with a constant climb of 8km to set up for a gonzo, steep and very technical descent laced with exposed roots. . .Only for Speed Freaks

Day 6 - La Garganta del Diablo(The Devil’s Throat)                                                                                                     We start this ride at the base of Tronador Mountain and climb to the Venisquero Negro(black glacier), very impressive. There are very few of these glaciers in the world. We’ll then ride to the Devil’s Throat, where you will see eternal ice formationsand amazing waterfalls.  On our return you will experience the thrilling Saltillo de las Nalcas Waterfalls.

Day 7 - Monte Tronador(Tronador Mountain)                              This, our last ride, is the most challenging, thrilling and spectacular. We start our ascent at 1950 meters elevation through forests and beautiful paths to the Catano Overo Glacier and it’s stunning waterfalls.  At the summit of we will enjoy a much deserved snack and thrill to the descent through this breathtaking landscape.
